Skyrocket, for string quartet, is based on a simple, five-note motive spanning a colossal leap. Throughout the piece, the leaping motive acts as a portal of sorts, allowing each player to transfer between two worlds: the earthly realm of low notes and the stratosphere of high tessitura. The five-note motive may leap upwards or down, but only via this mechanism can the instruments escape from one realm to the other. Skyrocket was written in 2015 for the Momenta Quartet, who premiered the work at the 2015 RED NOTE New Musical Festival in Normal, Illinois. An expanded version of the piece was completed later the same year.
