Borrowed Time, for violin and piano, was born out of my fascination with the music of the Hungarian composer György Ligeti (1923–2006). At the time of the work’s composition, I’d been exploring in particular Ligeti’s later-period pieces (of the 1980s and 90s), which are perhaps less avant-garde than the music for which he is best remembered, but which nevertheless abound with a certain Eastern European charm. The majority of the rhythmic patterns in Borrowed Time are “borrowed” from various Ligeti works (thus the title). Borrowed Time was written in 2010 for violinist Rolf Schulte and pianist Geoffrey Burleson, who recorded the work at the 2010 Cleveland Composers Recording Institute in Cleveland, Ohio.
